I've always much more enjoyed seeing subjects posed like this in portrait paintings than in photographs. I think portraits like this are trying too hard to be like a painting rather than a photograph.Too obviously staged, too pictorial, too idealised

Even though it's as staged as the portrait, Sargent somehow reveals something in his subject that the photographer couldn't manage in his.
